Who Needs This?
Every citizen should be prepared, but some people and professions are at higher risk. Some examples are... Night Shift Workers, Realtors, College Students, Delivery & House Call Professions, Travelers, Handicapped, Elderly, Women, Bouncers & Security, LE & Military
O.K., I'm pretty safe. What Do I Have To Be Concerned About?
You live in a clean and friendly neighborhood, a good job nearby and crimeÌs are almost non-existent. Consider these things... Burglaries, assaults and rapes happen EVERYWHERE. No community is immune. Acts of indiscriminant violence, by disturbed or disgruntled people, can occur at any workplace, school, mall, park, street, or even in places of worship. No one is immune. Natural disasters and riots can leave an area or whole region in power outage and anarchy. Events like Hurricane Katrina and the LA Riots (Rodney King) are large scale examples of times when law enforcement has been powerless to help people. Looters and other criminals always take advantage of times like these.
Terrorism, foreign and domestic, is real and itÌs here in Minnesota. Our Emergency Services (LE, Fire, & Medical) are preparing for WHEN the next Jihad related attack occurs. NOT ÏifÓ. Osama has promised us a lot of pain, like that suffered at Beslan Russia, where school children were the target. No government agency can fully prevent an attack. Terrorists may be stalled, but they will find a way. Individuals will also take action such as the DC Sniper and other Ïlone wolfÓ attacks. We, the average citizen, can and have halted terrorist & criminal activity by simply reporting suspicious behavior or things we notice that are unusual or out of place. We are the first line of warning and defense.
9-1-1. When SECONDS count, help is just MINUTES away! Even at situations like the mass murders at a shopping mall in Omaha or Virginia Tech the police can arrive within 2 minutes of being notified, which is a quick response, but still too late for the victims. Compare that to a woman with a carry permit stopping a mass killer at her church!
Most of us wear seatbelts, have fire extinguishers & detectors, practice fire drills and have appropriate insurance for self, family, and property. Maybe you have never been in a car accident or fire, but you know others have and you are prepared if it happens to you. NOW is the time to be prepared with training to protect yourself and others. Insurance worth investing in!
Good News!
When citizens fight back, they often win! In an example of unarmed self defense, Tony Blauer recounts the story of a man gaining entry to a home, striking a woman in the head (knocking her down with a concussion). Her teenage daughter tried to stop him, but was knocked out. When Mom saw her daughter go down, she got up and successfully drove him away! Mr. Blauer asks ÏWhere did she get her black belt? I want to know where she trained!Ó The point being that she was not trained. She reacted to the situation by attacking the attacker with determination, instead of lying down in victim hood. Let us also not forget another example of unarmed bravery when passengers resisted terrorists on flight 93 of Sept. 11, 2001. They died, but countless others lived because of their attempt and ultimate sacrifice.
Special training and having a weapon is ALWAYS BENEFICIAL AND ENCOURAGED, Determination to fight canÌt always save us, skills are needed, but you DO NOT need 3-20 years of martial arts or a black belt to be prepared for an assault. More training is beneficial, but few can or will commit to it. Be aware that many traditional and sport martial arts DO NOT properly prepare people for violent attacks. Your training should include realistic skills practiced in realistic scenarios and force-on-force practice with a padded attacker. Sparring is not realistic.
Ms. Jeanne Assam became a life saving hero in Dec. of Ì07. A man, angry at ÏChristiansÓ, entered the sanctuary of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs with 3 guns, 1000 rounds of ammo, an armored vest, and over 1000 Christians for human targets. Ms. Assam was a church member with a carry permit and had volunteered, with others, to keep watch for the safety of the church. She drew his attention and fired multiple shots, wounding the murderer. He went down and then committed suicide. The church has no professional security force. They were citizens with carry permits and a heart to protect others. Compare that situation to the Virginia Tech, Omaha Mall, Columbine and other shootings in places and businesses that ban citizens from protecting themselves. ÏGUN FREE ZONESÓ become KILLING ZONES. A business can also be held liable for the safety of its employees and clients. Especially if they disarm them!
When the strong attack the weak, it is the armed weak that are best prepared. Firearms have been dubbed the Ïgreat equalizerÓ in that a 100 lb. woman can defend against a much bigger man or multiple attackers. Guns are not always the best choice for everyone, you must be prepared to use it. The training needed is available to most citizens, but just like with martial arts, you want training in SURVIVAL skills, not sport skills. Handgun sights are RARELY seen in gunfights. Too fast and too close. Point shooting skills are needed (and proven to work) for most situations, but precision shooting skills are also beneficial for those other situations where time and opportunity are available.
